Venezuela Recalls Diplomatic Missions to Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, Peru, Panama, Dominican Republic and Uruguay

The Venezuelan government demanded that the seven countries immediately withdraw their diplomatic representatives after some Latin American countries made interventionist statements regarding the presidential election held on July 28. The government of Nicolas Maduro stated that the countries in question used expressions that amounted to intervention in Venezuela’s internal affairs and suspended diplomatic relations.

“Venezuela has the right to self-determination. We are capable of taking the necessary measures against all actions that threaten peace and coexistence. We reject in the strongest terms these statements that try to ignore the election results,” the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry said in a statement

Concerns Over Election Results

• Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, Peru, Panama, the Dominican Republic and Uruguay expressed deep concern over the results of the presidential election in Venezuela.
• The countries in question have called for an “emergency” meeting of the Organization of American States (OAS) to fully review the election results.
• According to the results announced by the Electoral Council, Maduro won the presidential election for the third time with 51.20 percent of the votes.
