The US has decided to increase its military presence in the Eastern Mediterranean region, continuing its efforts to ensure international security. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin has ordered the addition of the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier to the USS Theodore Roosevelt aircraft carrier currently serving in the region. The official statement from the Pentagon noted that the USS Abraham Lincoln is equipped with F-35C fighter jets.
“Secretary Austin emphasized the United States’ commitment to take all necessary steps to support and defend Israel. He noted that in light of escalating regional tensions, the United States has increased its military force posture and capabilities in the Middle East. Reinforcing this commitment, Secretary Austin issued instructions for the rapid transition of the USS Abraham Lincoln, equipped with F-35C fighter jets, to the Central Command area of responsibility, in addition to the existing capabilities provided by the USS Theodore Roosevelt,” the statement said.
The Pentagon also announced that the guided missile submarine USS Georgia is on its way to join the military presence in the region.
Roosevelt Replaces Eisenhower
Following the military escalation that began on October 7, the Pentagon first sent the aircraft carrier USS Dwight Eisenhower to the Eastern Mediterranean. After a months-long mission, USS Eisenhower left the region, leaving the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt in its place. During this period, there was only one aircraft carrier in the region. With Austin’s latest decision, two aircraft carriers will now be operating in the CENTCOM region.
