Ed Eyestone: The Marathon Coach

Ed Eyestone: The Marathon Coach

Ed Eyestone, a seasoned coach and two-time Olympian, is known for his level-headedness and practical approach to training. He has a knack for discussing his athletes’ extensive 23-mile training runs in a manner that makes them sound as effortless as a leisurely stroll. Eyestone recognizes the inherent difficulty of marathons and the rigorous training required, so he sees no need to exaggerate the challenges faced by his runners.

However, when the conversation shifts to the marathon course set for the upcoming Paris Olympics, Eyestone’s tone changes. There’s a palpable sense of respect—and perhaps a hint of apprehension—when he speaks about the course. “This marathon,” he states, “will have a debris field in the final miles.”

The Paris Marathon Challenge

Over the past couple of weeks, countless Olympians have taken on formidable challenges. Gymnasts have elegantly balanced on narrow 4-inch beams, skateboarders have soared above rails and ramps, and triathletes have plunged into waters that are less than pristine.

Yet, it appears that the Paris 2024 organizers have reserved the most daunting obstacle for last. This weekend, athletes will navigate a grueling 26.2-mile marathon course that features a series of steep ascents and punishing descents, making it arguably the most challenging marathon course in Olympic history.

“It’s really hard to convey just how extreme the course is without experiencing it firsthand,” noted one coach, emphasizing the unique difficulties that await runners.

The Pursuit of Glory

The Pursuit of Glory

The essence of this marathon, like all competitions, is the quest for glory. However, for many of the athletes, the primary objective may be one of endurance and survival.

Canadian marathoner Malindi Elmore vividly recalls her first impression of the Paris course when she saw it in February. “Oh, my gosh,” she exclaimed to her husband, “this looks ridiculous.” The daunting nature of the course is already becoming a talking point among competitors, setting the stage for an Olympic marathon that promises to test both mental and physical limits.
