US President Biden announced that he is withdrawing his candidacy in the presidential election to be held on November 5. The primary election process in Iowa, which began on January 15, ended in June. Biden received support from approximately 3,800 delegates to be nominated in the elections.
Biden Faces Criticism
Biden has been the target of criticism for his health and performance. The number of billionaire donors calling for Biden to withdraw from the race has also increased. Congressman Lloyd Doggett was the first Democrat to call for Biden to withdraw from the race.
Biden Endorses Kamala Harris
In his statement withdrawing his candidacy, Biden stated that he gave his full support to Vice President Kamala Harris to be the Democratic Party nominee.
New Candidate Selection Process
After Biden withdraws, delegates at the convention must vote for a new candidate. The party needs the support of 1,968 delegates to become its presidential candidate.
Names for Candidacy
Along with Harris, Michelle Obama’s name is also being considered for the nomination. Pelosi had directly called for Harris not to be nominated and for a race to be held for the nomination.
