The Challenge of the Turkish National Women’s Volleyball Team
In the semi-finals of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, the National Women’s Volleyball Team lost its chance to the final by losing 3-0 to its strong opponent Italy. Now, our team will compete against Brazil for the bronze medal.
At the beginning of the match, both teams scored points by responding to each other. While the first minutes of the set were tied at 5-5, the National Team increased the difference to 4 points (9-5) with the effective play of Eda Erdem Dündar, Elif Şahin and Zehra Güneş, forcing Italy Head Coach Julio Velasco to call a timeout. However, Italy increased its offensive efficiency and the set was tied in the middle (14-14).
Coming from behind to take the lead 18-16, Italy this time directed National Women’s Volleyball Team Head Coach Daniele Santarelli to call a timeout. Italy increased the difference to 4 points (17-21), but the national team responded with Melissa Vargas’ points and Zehra Güneş’s blocks, reducing the difference to 1 point (20-21). However, Italy played better in the final stages of the match and finished the first set ahead 25-22.
Starting the second set with a 2-0 series, Italy responded to the crescent-star team with points from Melissa Vargas and Ebrar Karakurt, taking a 3-2 lead. In these minutes, the game continued with points from both sides, and the beginning of the set was tied 8-8.
The middle of the set was also tied at 13-13, and the national team took a 2-point lead (15-13) with points from Hande Balâdın and Zehra Güneş. However, Italy won 4 consecutive points to equalize the score and then created a 2-point lead (15-17). This prompted Daniele Santarelli to call a timeout. Italy continued to play well and made fewer mistakes towards the end of the set, winning the second set with a score of 25-19.
The national team, which started the third set well, found a 3-point difference (6-3) and this situation forced Italy Head Coach Julio Velasco to call a timeout. Leading 12-9 in the middle of the set, the crescent-stars forced Velasco to call his second timeout.
Coming into the 20s with a 2-point advantage (20-18), the national team could not maintain this advantage. Coming from behind to take the lead and continuing its effective play, Italy won the third set 25-22 and the match 3-0, becoming the opponent of the USA in the final to be played on August 11.
