Internal Migration Statistics 2023
The Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) has published the “Internal Migration Statistics” bulletin for 2023. According to this bulletin, the rate of population migrating between provinces, which was 3.18% in the 2007-2008 period, has fluctuated over time and reached 4.04 % in 2023. In this context, 3 million 450 thousand 953 people migrated between provinces throughout Turkey last year. 47.9% of this migrating population were men and 52.1% were women.
Provinces with the Most Migration
In the distribution of the population migrating between provinces in Turkey, Istanbul stood out as the province that received the most migration with 412,707 people. Istanbul was followed by Ankara with 232,700 people and Izmir with 147,765 people. The provinces that received the least migration are as follows:
- Ardahan: 6 thousand 856 people
- Bayburt: 10,202 people
- Tunceli: 11 thousand 806 people
Provinces with the Most Migration
Istanbul was the province with the highest number of emigrants with 581,330 people. This province was followed by Ankara with 208,740 people and Hatay with 164,247 people. The provinces with the lowest number of emigrants were listed as follows:
- Ardahan: 6 thousand 811 people
- Tunceli: 7,234 people
- Kilis: 7 thousand 604 people
Migration Mobility and Age Groups
Last year, the highest migration movement in Turkey occurred in the 20-24 age group with 647,191 people. In this age group, 43.4% of those migrating were men and 56.6% were women. In addition, it was determined that 601,481 of those migrating were dependent on one of the members of the household.
Reasons for Migration
When other reasons for migration were examined, it was revealed that 518,016 people migrated for better housing and living conditions, and 512,011 people migrated for education. The reasons for migration by gender are listed as follows:

- Dependent migration of one of the household members: 361 thousand 15 people

In 2023, the reason for migration in the 20-24 age group, where the highest migration movement occurred in Turkey, was education. It was determined that 231 thousand 447 of those migrating in this age group migrated for education, 94 thousand 139 for starting a job or finding a job, and 50 thousand 8 for better housing and living conditions.
