The Moulin Rouge, the renowned Parisian cabaret, has successfully restored its iconic windmill after its blades broke and fell to the ground in April. The construction was completed just in time for the upcoming Paris Olympics and the passing of the flame through Paris on July 15.
“We wanted to be prepared for this special moment,” said Jean-Victor Clerico, the managing director of the cabaret. He emphasized the significance of the windmill to the Moulin Rouge’s identity, stating, “The Moulin Rouge without the blades? It’s not the same.”
Despite the windmill being out of commission, the cabaret remained open during the repairs. The restoration efforts were met with global support and sympathy, with fans sending letters and even composing poems to show their solidarity.
Following two months of intensive work, the aluminum blades were successfully reinstalled on schedule. The cabaret marked this milestone with a vibrant street show, where approximately 1,500 spectators gathered to witness the return of the windmill’s bright neon lights.
During the celebratory event, dancers adorned in blue, white, and red costumes performed the cancan, a symbol of both Paris and the cabaret culture embodied by the Moulin Rouge. The enthusiastic crowd cheered as the performers showcased their lively kicks and twirls, creating a spectacle reminiscent of the cabaret’s rich history.
Mr. Clerico shared that this outdoor performance was only the second time the Moulin Rouge had presented the cancan on the street, with the first occasion being during its 130th-anniversary celebration in 2019.
