This was recorded as the hottest June in human history.
June broke temperature records for 13 consecutive months, with the global average temperature of the last 12 months reaching the highest level on record, measured at 0.76 degrees above the 1991-2020 average. This was also 1.64 degrees above the 1850-1900 pre-industrial average.
2024 Predictions and Evaluations
While it was stated that the first half of the year was one of the hottest 6 months in the world, it was emphasized that the average temperature of the first 6 months of 2024 was 0.9 degrees higher than the average between 1970-2000. During this period, each month broke the record for the hottest month.
According to information received from climate change experts, it is stated that temperature records will not continue with the end of the El Nino effect. It is stated that El Nino is directly related to the temperature records of the last 13 months and that the La Nina period has now passed.
It is estimated that the summer of 2024 could be the second or third hottest summer on record, and that the rest of the year could see rare temperature records. However, it is noted that the probability of the average temperature breaking a record worldwide has decreased and milder temperatures are expected in the coming period.
Climate Change Warning for Türkiye
Experts say that countries in the Mediterranean Basin, including Turkey, will be negatively affected by climate change and that temperatures will increase and approach a desert climate. They warn that this situation may bring about effects such as greatly reduced rainfall, increased dry days and increased frequency of sudden, heavy rains.
