The Mehmed Ağa Mosque and Complex, built by the Architect Davud Ağa in 1585 by the Darüssade Ağa of Murat III in Fatih, came to the fore with the PVC windows installed after the restoration works. According to historical records, the mosque underwent extensive renovations in 1743, 1938 and 1982. The entrances of the congregation hall were closed with glass in the late 1980s. Finally, restoration work was carried out in the complex by the General Directorate of Foundations in 2016. Following the restoration works, the windows of the mosque were replaced with windows made of PVC material.

This change, which is unknown by whom and when, has damaged the historical texture and appearance of the mosque. While the windows of the tomb inside the complex were made with wooden materials to match the historical texture, the PVC windows in the historical structure are striking. The restoration work started this year by the Fatih Municipality on the Mehmed Ağa Fountain outside the complex continues.

History and Importance of Mehmed Agha Mosque

Mehmed Ağa Mosque is an important structure with a history of approximately 440 years. According to historian and author Zafer Bilgi, the mosque is located in the Yeditepe district of Istanbul, in the city center. The mosque was built with an aesthetic concern and draws attention with its details. This structure, which dazzles with its historical texture, engravings and ornaments, is one of the important historical structures of Istanbul.

Historian writer Bilgi states that PVC windows that damage the historical texture of the mosque are not aesthetically appropriate. He emphasizes the need to preserve the original appearance of the historical mosque and social complex and to revitalize the historical texture.

The restoration work was carried out by the General Directorate of Foundations in 2016. However, the fact that the PVC windows were not compatible with the historical texture caused criticism. Historian and author Bilgi states that the historical texture should be re-inserted and that aesthetic concerns should be prioritized.

The protection of such historical artifacts and careful attention to their restoration processes are of great importance in terms of passing on the cultural heritage to future generations.
