Red Algae Alarm in Tekirdağ
The northeaster wind that was effective in the city yesterday, along with the large waves that formed on the sea surface, dragged various wastes and seaweed to the shore. In the Süleymanpaşa district of Tekirdağ, some parts of the shore were covered with red seaweed due to the strong wind. This situation caused a distinct seaweed accumulation to form in some areas on the shore.
Dean of Tekirdağ Namık Kemal University Corlu Engineering Faculty Prof. Dr. Lokman Hakan Tecer , emphasized that these algae are not caused by environmental pollution. Tecer stated that these deposits are formed as a result of the north wind washing the algae from the seabed onto the shore. “There are those who think that the algae are caused by pollution, but this is not true,” said Tecer and continued his words as follows:
- “Due to the strong south-west wind, seaweed washed ashore. “This is not a sign of any pollution.”
- “Due to the prolonged winds, the seaweed was swept towards the shore.”
- “Depending on the increase in temperature, these algae can sometimes produce an odor.”
Tecer stated that citizens who see this seaweed on the beach should not worry, and that such events occur from time to time in Tekirdağ. The red seaweed covering some parts of the beach, Süleymanpaşa Municipalitycontinues to be cleaned by crews.
