Protests and Delegates at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago

Next week, Chicago is poised to become a focal point for thousands of demonstrators as the Democratic National Convention unfolds. A significant portion of the protests will center around the U.S. involvement in the ongoing conflict in Gaza. However, city officials are increasingly wary of potential disruptions that could occur within the convention arena itself, particularly during prime-time events.

Among the attendees will be approximately 30 uncommitted delegates representing a segment of Democratic primary voters who have expressed their discontent with President Biden. Their dissatisfaction largely stems from what they perceive as his administration’s unwavering support for Israel amidst the brutal conflict that escalated following the Hamas attacks last October. To address these concerns and mitigate tensions, state party leaders such as Lavora Barnes, chairwoman of the Michigan Democratic Party, and Ken Martin, chairman of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party in Minnesota, have engaged in diplomatic efforts over the past few months. These conversations aim to foster unity and avoid any high-profile confrontations during the convention.

According to sources from both sides, there have been some positive developments, particularly following the elevation of Vice President Kamala Harris as the presumptive Democratic nominee in place of Biden. Ms. Barnes noted a shift in the response from uncommitted delegates, highlighting a newfound hope and willingness for dialogue. “I have seen a change in their response to the new ticket, a hope and an openness to conversation,” she stated in an interview. This sentiment extends to the significant Arab American community in her critical swing state. “I know these folks are eager to participate in the process; they are determined to defeat Donald Trump. They recognize that Trump is not part of the solution here.”

In discussions with uncommitted delegates, a consensus emerged regarding the threat posed by former President Donald J. Trump. They acknowledge the risks to their communities and to the Palestinian people, particularly given Trump’s administration, which granted Israel unfettered support and used the term “Palestinian” disparagingly. Trump’s former senior advisor, Jared Kushner, and his ex-ambassador to Israel have even hinted at plans to encourage Israel to annex the occupied West Bank and to exploit “Gaza’s waterfront property” for development.

Despite the ongoing diplomatic efforts, the uncommitted delegates have outlined demands unlikely to be fulfilled before the convention kicks off. Their requests include:

  • A private meeting with Vice President Harris.
  • An arms embargo on Israel.
  • A revision of the Democratic platform to shift U.S. foreign policy away from unconditional support for Israel.
  • Specific privileges within the convention, such as:
    • Dedicated speaking time for delegates.
    • Credentials for staff associated with the uncommitted movement.
    • Training space within the convention hall.
    • A prominent speaking slot for Tanya Haj-Hassan, a pediatric intensive care doctor with volunteer experience in Gaza.

As the convention approaches, the balance between unity and dissent remains delicate, and the actions of these delegates could significantly influence the Democratic Party’s narrative heading into the crucial fall campaign.
