World Triathlon, the governing body of the sport, announced that the race would now take place on Wednesday morning, following the completion of the women’s triathlon. The organization mentioned that the possibility of further rescheduling remains open depending on the situation.
The rescheduling was necessary as recent tests revealed inadequate water quality levels in the Seine, prompting concerns for the well-being of the athletes. The Olympics website briefly cited “weather” as the reason for the change in schedule.
While the postponement may disappoint spectators and participants, the Paris organizers had forewarned about the potential impact of heavy rainfall on the event. The city had accounted for such scenarios by incorporating flexible dates in the competition schedule.
The recent heavy rain during the opening ceremony led to a rise in harmful bacteria levels in the Seine, a situation exacerbated by the hot and dry summer conditions. Typically, it takes one to three days for the water quality to improve after such weather events.
