Call of Women’s Rights Organizations
With the call of more than 200 women’s rights organizations in France, thousands of women took to the streets against the far-right National Unity Party throughout the country, especially in the capital Paris. The National Unity Party is leading according to opinion polls in the parliamentary elections, the first round of which will be held next week. However, it seems unlikely that the party will win the majority.
Protests and Concerns
Women’s rights organizations argue that if the National Unity Party wins the election, it may harm many rights and freedoms, including immigrant, LGBTI+ and women’s rights. Feminist organizations are also concerned about the National Union’s stance on birth control. During the protests in Paris, women tried to make their voices heard by carrying various slogans and banners.
French Parliamentary Elections
In France, 577 members of the National Assembly, the lower house of the parliament, will be elected in general elections. Elections will be held on June 30 and July 7. Polls show the National Union leading, while the leftist alliance New Popular Front and President Macron’s alliance are also strong.
Concern of German Chancellor Scholz
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz stated that he was concerned about the possibility of the far-right victory in the elections in France. Scholz said, “I am worried about the elections in France. I hope the parties other than Le Pen will be successful in the elections.”
