Fisherman İlker Özdemir, who set out to sea from the Gökçeada district of Çanakkale, encountered a mako shark, which was entangled in longline nets and is prohibited from being caught. When Özdemir set out to sea with his friends to fish, he saw a motionless fish on the surface of the water off the Kaleköy Port of Gökçeada.

İlker Özdemir noticed that this mako shark, which was 3 meters long and weighed about 500 kilograms, was dead and tangled in the longline nets. Upon seeing the fish’s condition, the team immediately took action and rescued the shark from the nets and released it back into the sea. The mako shark has the title of being the fastest fish in the world, with a speed of up to 80 kilometers per hour. This speed is due to the special skin structure of the mako shark.

Thanks to this impressive speed, mako sharks can travel enormous distances of up to 55 kilometers per day. They are also capable of jumping from the water surface to a height of up to 9 meters. Mako sharks are among the species that inhabit both tropical and temperate waters of the world’s oceans.

Mako sharks are divided into two main species: the shortfin mako shark and the longfin mako shark. These fish typically reach lengths of 2–4 meters and are related to the great white shark as a member of the mackerel shark family.

Distinctive features of this particular species include their pointed noses, curved and enlarged front teeth, and large eyes.
