Anti-Muslim sentiment has reached alarming levels in France, the country with the largest Muslim population in Europe. In the country where approximately 7 million Muslims live, both state policies and the discriminatory attitude of society are deepening the problems of Muslims.

Anti-immigrant sentiment in France has turned into racism against Muslims since the 2000s. The principles of secularism and equality in the country’s Constitution have been misinterpreted and Muslims are being discriminated against.

  • Women who want to make a career in the country with their Muslim identity may face discrimination and have to seek job opportunities abroad, despite their education and skills.
  • In France, wearing religious symbols is prohibited in all public institutions, and children of veiled mothers are even prevented from attending school trips.
  • In the 2,500 mosques in the country, even the call to prayer is not allowed, and religious freedoms are restricted under the name of secularism.

Anti-Islamic Bans in France

France has long been known for its anti-Islam bans, starting with a headscarf ban in state schools in 2004 and continuing with a ban on veils and burqas in public spaces in 2010. These bans are defended on the country’s grounds of secularism and security.

For example, in 2015, a middle school student and in 2016, a high school student were not allowed into school because they were wearing long skirts. In 2023, wearing abayas in schools was banned, and discrimination continues under the name of secularism.

  • The French Football Federation has not allowed female footballers to wear the hijab since 2016, in violation of FIFA rules.
  • French athletes were met with international backlash after they were not allowed to wear headscarves at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
  • French athletes are banned from wearing the hijab, as it is considered a public duty.

Anti-Muslim sentiment and discrimination are widespread problems in France, not only in sports but also in society in general. This situation is fed by the country’s secularism and its misapplications.

Calls for individuals with a Muslim identity to have equal rights and freedoms in France and international reactions emphasize the need to take important steps to end discrimination.
