Albanese Responds to Israel’s Claims of Self-Defense in Palestinian Territories
UN Special Rapporteur on Palestine Albanese, in a statement on social media, said, “Israel claims that the actions it carries out in the West Bank are legitimate within the framework of the right of self-defense. However, this claim has no legal validity.”
Albanese, International Court of JusticeRecalling the advisory opinion given by the ICJ in 2004 regarding the wall built by Israel in the occupied Palestinian territory, the ICJ held that Israel had no right to use these lands. UN CharterHe stated that the Court ruled that Israel does not have the right to self-defense as stipulated in Article 51 of the ECJ. He also emphasized that the advisory opinion issued by the ICJ in July had determined that Israel’s presence in the occupied Palestinian territories was illegal.
“Israel cannot resort to self-defense claims in its occupation of Palestinian territories. This would amount to a distortion of the facts. Such an approach is an attempt to legitimise its unlawful attacks on the territorial integrity and political independence of the State of Palestine, ” Albanese said.
“If Israel truly wants to ensure its security, it must stop its colonization of another people’s land, withdraw from that land completely, provide appropriate compensation for the damage it has caused, and ensure that it apologizes to the victims when it leaves,” Albanese , the UN Special Rapporteur on Palestine, said.
