Turkey’s High-Tech Production and Export Performance
Turkey continues to take important steps towards its goal of becoming a center for high-tech production and investments. Compilations based on Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) data clearly reveal developments in this area. While high-tech product exports were realized as 641.9 million dollars in the first month of the year, this figure was dropped to 531.3 million dollars in February. However, it increased to 707.3 million dollars in March. While exports were 648.1 million dollars in April, this figure reached 872.9 million dollars in May, marking the highest level of the year. In June, high-tech product exports were recorded as 732.1 million dollars.
Thus, a total of $4.1 billion worth of high-tech product exports were realized in the first half of 2023. In this process, the distribution of high-tech product exports by sector is quite remarkable.
- Air and Space Vehicles Manufacturing:1.4 billion dollars
- Manufacturing of Pharmaceutical and Herbal Products:1.2 billion dollars
- Manufacturing of Instruments and Devices for Measurement, Testing and Control Purposes:547 million dollars
Export Performance in Medium-High Technology
Exports of medium-high-tech products also increased in the first quarter of the year. These exports, which were $6.8 billion in January, rose to $7.4 billion in February and $7.9 billion in March. However, exports fell to $6.6 billion in April and reached the highest level of the year in May, reaching $8.3 billion. This figure fell to $6.7 billion in June. In the first six months, medium-high-tech product exports reached a total of $43.7 billion.
The sectors that contributed the most during this period are listed as follows:
- Manufacturing of Motor Land Vehicles:10.8 billion dollars
- Manufacturing of General Purpose Machines:5.2 billion dollars
- Some Chemical Products:4.7 billion dollars
As a result, a total of $47.8 billion worth of high and medium-high technology product exports were realized in the first half of 2023, and the share of these products in the manufacturing industry was determined as 40.2%.
