Prof. Dr. Lokman Hakan Tecer, Dean of NKÜ Çorlu Faculty of Engineering, stated that there has been a significant increase in sea water temperatures in the seas surrounding Turkey in the last 50 years. The Marmara Sea stands out as one of the seas that has warmed the most.

Tecer said that the average sea water temperature in the Marmara Sea was 15.3 degrees Celsius in the 1970s, and that this value has increased to 17.8 degrees Celsius today. He emphasized that in the same period, there was an increase of 0.9 degrees Celsius in the Black Sea, 1.4 degrees Celsius in the Aegean Sea and 1.2 degrees Celsius in the Mediterranean.

Prof. Dr. Tecer stated that warming in the atmosphere could increase sea water temperatures, and that this situation was worrying. He explained that although the increase in sea water temperatures did not affect people entering the sea, atmospheric conditions and heat waves increased sea water temperatures.

Tecer, who stated that the increase in temperatures could trigger the formation of mucilage, which was previously seen in the Marmara Sea, drew attention to the fact that this situation could have negative effects on the marine ecosystem. He also stated that the increase in temperature could negatively affect the life of marine creatures by decreasing oxygen levels and could cause species to decrease.
