A 6-storey building on Birlik Street in the Hürriyet Neighbourhood in Bahçelievler was evacuated as a precaution after pieces of its side wall fell. The cause of the incident has not yet been determined. While citizens evacuated the building with their own means, security, municipality and fire department teams were also dispatched to the scene. The street was closed to traffic and citizens were evacuated from the building where a guesthouse was placed by the municipality.
Bahçelievler Municipality teams will take core samples from the building and conduct detailed tests on the structure. Mayor Hakan Bahadır made a statement regarding the incident and said, “There was a continuous settlement here. This situation occurred as a result of the side wall of an apartment building in the urban transformation process being affected. The condition of the building will be examined , but no serious problems have been encountered at the moment.”
Urban Transformation is Important
Bahadır emphasized the need for a faster urban transformation process and said, “I would like to state that the building is 48 years old and has completed its lifespan. Since the building was technically built before the 1999 earthquake, it does not comply with today’s standards. The building, which has a shop underneath and an illegal floor, needs urban transformation.”
In the evacuated building, security and law enforcement teams continue to take the necessary precautions to prevent any negative situations.
