The wildfires that affected the Jasper region and spread to Canada’s touristic Jasper National Park have left behind great devastation. The fires, which caused the evacuation of approximately 25,000 people in Alberta, reportedly destroyed 358 of the 1,113 structures in Jasper National Park. Jasper Mayor Richard Ireland, who lost his home in the fires, said that all that remained from his home were memories and that many people were in the same situation.

Authorities said the cause of the fires was being investigated, and that firefighting teams were taking advantage of the cooling weather and rainfall, and were able to bring hot spots under control. Noting that temperatures were expected to rise again as of Monday, authorities reported that 48 forest fires that could not be brought under control continued in the province of Alberta.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced yesterday that fire crews from South Africa, Australia, Mexico and New Zealand will come to help fight the fires in the provinces of Alberta and British Columbia.
