İSHAK KARA (VAN) – Van Women’s Platform Draws Attention to Femicide

İSHAK KARA (VAN) - Van Kadın Platformu, Kadın Cinayetlerine Dikkat Çekti

Van Women’s Platform made a statement regarding the suspicious deaths of 21 women in Van and surrounding provinces in the last 6 months. The platform emphasized that effective measures should be taken to prevent violence against women.

The action organized by Van Women’s Platform was attended by DEM Party Van Deputy Gülcan Kaçmaz Sayyiğit, Van Metropolitan Municipality Co-Mayor Neslihan Şedal, Star Women’s Association, People’s Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) and Democratic Regions Party (DBP) provincial and district Administrators, TJA, Mayors and many women attended. A banner reading “Femicide is political” was opened during the protest.

“7 Women Killed in 24 Hours”

Speaking on behalf of the platform, Star Women’s Association President Lawyer Zeynep Demir stated that 7 women were killed by men in the last 24 hours and emphasized that they were sad and angry for every woman who lost their lives. Demir stated that femicide should be addressed as a social problem, not through numbers and lists.

Drawing attention to the report prepared by the Star Women’s Association for Van and Surrounding Provinces in 2024, Demir said, “In the first half of the year, 21 women lost their lives due to suspicious female deaths and femicide. We see from the increasing news of murder deaths that the mechanisms to prevent violence against women are not used effectively. The state, the individual “It is obliged to protect its material and spiritual existence from all kinds of danger, threats and violence,” he said.

“Restraining Policies and Mechanisms Should Be Put into Action Urgently”

Zeynep Demir stated that the state should strengthen its mechanisms to combat violence against women at a time when violence, deaths, rape and harassment continue to increase. Demir called for the necessary steps to be taken to ensure women’s right to life.

Finally, addressing the government, Demir said, “We demand that the necessary work be done to prevent violence against women, and we emphasize that the struggle to prevent violence against women will continue.”
