Situation Report in Gaza by UNRWA Staff

Two UNRWA staff, senior communications officer, attending the daily press briefing at the UN online Luis Waterridgeand Senior Assistant Field Manager Sam Rose, reported on the latest situation in Gaza. Waterridge, an UNRWA employee currently in the central Gaza Strip, described the situation there as “a complete disaster.”

“We have been receiving relentless displacement orders from Israel in the central, southern and northern parts of the Gaza Strip for the last few weeks. What we are seeing here is hundreds of thousands of people being forced to move every day,” Waterridge said. “Most people are moving on foot. Access to any kind of vehicle is very limited now for this kind of displacement and people don’t know where to go,” he said.

Luis Waterridge stressed that people taking refuge on the Mediterranean coast are trying to prevent seawater from entering their temporary shelters by “building walls of sand” and that these conditions are “terrible”. Waterridge noted that scorpions, mice and snakes pose a danger on the land and that there has been a noticeable increase in the spread of diseases.
