After over a week marked by sporadic far-right violence, a sense of calm began to settle over Britain on Wednesday night. An unverified list of more than 30 locations associated with the immigration system, which had been widely disseminated online, failed to incite significant rioting. Instead, it prompted a heavy police presence and attracted large crowds of counterprotesters who came out to defend their communities.

In the days leading up to this, incidents of racist and anti-immigrant rioting erupted in more than a dozen towns and cities across England, as well as in Northern Ireland. The police reported that over 400 arrests had been made, with many individuals facing court proceedings, and some already beginning their sentences in prison.

The catalyst for this wave of unrest was a tragic knife attack that took the lives of three young girls, compounded by the spread of misinformation regarding the attacker. Those who participated in the riots represented a small and largely unpopular fringe group, disavowed even by politicians who typically seek to tap into the wider public’s concerns about immigration. Nevertheless, this disconnect has not made it easy to quell the violence.
