UNICEF Executive Director Russell Calls for Humanitarian Situation in Gaza at Catastrophic Level

UNICEF Executive Director Russell drew attention to the urgent humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, stating that families are faced with new horrors every day. Stressing that attacks on schools continue, Russell said that children are constantly facing danger.

Russell noted that there was a risk of diseases such as polio spreading due to the collapse of the health system and infrastructure, and that attacks on humanitarian workers were hindering efforts.

UNICEF Vehicle Targeted

Russell said that a clearly marked UNICEF vehicle in Gaza was hit by bullets and humanitarian aid activities were disrupted, which had a negative impact on the flow of humanitarian aid.

Russell said civilians in Gaza were deprived of supplies and trade had collapsed, adding that at least 278 aid workers had been killed. He said the security environment needed to be improved urgently and called for a sustainable ceasefire.
