The Olympic medals have been pouring in for Ukraine in recent days, with athletes clinching gold in track events and fencing, alongside a silver medal in gymnastics and two bronze medals. “It’s a time to celebrate and think not about the war,” remarked Mykhailo Kokhan, 23, a member of Ukraine’s national guard, following his bronze medal victory in the men’s hammer throw on Sunday.

The Paris Games have offered a much-needed escape for a nation grappling with the realities of war, where creativity has flourished even in adversity. For instance, one bakery has taken to selling pastries shaped like anti-tank obstacles, a peculiar yet poignant reflection of the times. However, the future of sports in Ukraine remains shrouded in uncertainty.

Ukraine’s contingent of 140 Olympians has demonstrated remarkable resilience since the onset of Russia’s invasion in February 2022. Many have prepared for the Paris Games in safer countries or at home, often under the grim soundtrack of air-raid alerts and missile attacks. Some high jumpers have resorted to training by flashlight during power outages, while others have ingeniously improvised their weight lifting routines by attaching car tires to a metal rod.

Despite these achievements, there is no immediate end to the conflict in sight. Once the Paris Games conclude on Sunday, Ukrainian officials will face the daunting task of repairing and sustaining the country’s devastated sports system. They are also looking ahead to ensure participation in future Winter and Summer Olympics, as well as various international competitions over the next decade.

“It’s hard to quantify, but we recognize that Ukraine has lost its next generation of athletes, as many children have been displaced,” stated Vadym Gutzeit, 52, the president of the Ukrainian Olympic Committee, during an interview held in June in Kyiv. The challenges faced by these athletes are monumental, but their spirit and determination continue to shine brightly on the world stage.
