Overview of Typhoon Gaemi’s Impact
Typhoon Gaemi weakened as it headed towards mainland China after causing havoc in Taiwan and the Philippines. The storm made landfall on Taiwan with wind speeds equivalent to a Category 3 hurricane, resulting in the suspension of numerous flights and severe flooding.
Current Situation
As of Thursday, Typhoon Gaemi had claimed at least six lives in Taiwan and the Philippines before moving towards mainland China. The storm is forecasted to hit the southeastern Chinese province of Fujian with the strength of a Category 1 hurricane.
Precautionary Measures
In anticipation of Gaemi’s landfall, Fuzhou, the capital of Fujian province, implemented strict measures such as banning group gatherings, closing schools and tourist sites, and shutting down nonessential businesses. Coastal provinces in China have also started evacuating tourists and directing ships to seek shelter.
Weather Forecast
The China Meteorological Administration predicts heavy rainfall in various parts of China, including Beijing, as Typhoon Gaemi moves inland over the next few days. Southern China, which has already been grappling with severe rain and flooding, is bracing for further impact.
Impact on Taiwan
Some local weather stations in Taiwan recorded almost four feet of rainfall due to Typhoon Gaemi, with estimates suggesting the total rainfall could reach nearly six feet. Over 600,000 electricity customers in Taiwan have faced power outages, and approximately 15% of them were still without power as of Thursday afternoon.
