Turkish Armed Forces to Serve in Somalia

Within the scope of the Presidential Memorandum, the Turkish Armed Forces were approved to serve in Somalia for two years. According to the memorandum, Turkish soldiers will provide support to ensure Somalia’s security against threats such as terrorism, piracy, illegal fishing and smuggling.

Based on strategic cooperation, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan held a telephone conversation with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. Erdogan emphasized the importance Turkey attaches to Somalia’s territorial integrity and stated that cooperation in energy, defense and other areas will increase.

Fighting Terrorism and Cooperation

In a statement made by the Directorate of Communications, President Erdoğan stated that Turkey would continue to support Somalia’s fight against terrorism and that mediation activities were ongoing to resolve the disputes between Somalia and Ethiopia.

It was emphasized that the cooperation between the two countries will continue to strengthen in energy, defense and other fields.
