At least 40 migrants lost their lives when a boat, carrying over 80 individuals, caught fire during a journey from Haiti to Turks and Caicos. The tragic incident occurred after the vessel departed from the northern coast of Haiti on Wednesday. The Haitian Coast Guard managed to rescue 41 migrants near Cap-Haïtien, with 11 individuals requiring hospitalization. The cause of the fire remains unknown.

This recent disaster adds to the turmoil faced by Haiti, which is grappling with widespread gang violence and a deepening humanitarian crisis. Earlier this year, the capital city of Port-au-Prince was rocked by coordinated gang attacks, leading to the temporary closure of the airport for nearly three months. The resulting violence has displaced approximately 580,000 Haitians, according to the U.N.

“This devastating event underscores the dangers encountered by migrants, including children and women, who opt for irregular migration routes. It emphasizes the critical necessity for establishing safe and legal pathways for migration,” stated Grégoire Goodstein, the head of the International Organization for Migration in Haiti.

The socio-economic situation in Haiti is dire, with escalating violence prompting desperate measures among the population. The country has been without a president since the assassination of Jovenel Moïse in July 2021, which remains under investigation both in Haiti and Florida.

In response to the escalating violence, foreign law enforcement officers from Kenya have arrived in Haiti to help regain control of Port-au-Prince from numerous armed groups. These groups have been responsible for attacking police stations, releasing prisoners, and carrying out killings with impunity.

Ariel Henry resigned as prime minister in late April, and Garry Conille, a former U.N. official, was appointed as the new prime minister by a presidential transitional council in late May. The multinational force, expected to reach 2,500 members and primarily organized by the U.S. administration, aims to address the security challenges in Haiti.
