Trabzon Kushtul Monastery

Trabzon Kuştul Manastırı

Located approximately 32 kilometers from the center of Trabzon, Kuştul Monastery is built on a high rock block that reveals a deep valley in a unique location. This historical structure is located in a strategic and difficult to reach spot due to the region it is located in.

It is estimated that the monastery has been developed with many additions and restorations since its construction. However, due to natural events and human effects over time, only the main body and the collapsed walls of the structure have survived to the present day.

Its history dates back to the 8th century

This monastery, thought to have been built in 752 AD, was abandoned for a while after a plunder in 1203. It then became active again in 1393. However, in 1904, the monastery was completely burned down in a major fire. After this disaster, the monastery was rebuilt for the third time. The ruins that have survived to the present day are quite few. It is known that the small church leaning to the north of the cave inside the monastery is not very old.
