In Bartın, Karabük and Zonguldak, more than 65 percent of which are covered with forests according to their surface area, tornadoes occurred in the forests in the 8-month period from November 2023 to June 2024. Thousands of trees were knocked over in Bartın, Zonguldak and Karabük as a result of the tornadoes. Zonguldak Forestry Regional Directorate teams continue their work to detect and remove fallen trees.

Prof. Dr. Ali Durkaya from Bartın University Faculty of Forestry stated that the forests in the Western Black Sea Region are among the richest forest assets in Turkey. He emphasized that the soil structure of the region is sensitive to erosion and the effects of global climate change are increasing.

“We have experienced tornadoes that we are not accustomed to”

Prof. Dr. Durkaya stated that unusual weather events have been experienced in the region in recent months and tornadoes have increased. He drew attention to the fact that tree fall incidents in forests may increase with the effects of global climate change.

Cooperatives support forest management teams

Cooperatives in the Kumluca town of Bartın support the work of the Zonguldak Forestry Regional Directorate teams and help remove trees that fell due to tornadoes. The cooperatives continue their work to protect forests and contribute to the economy.
