The Labour Party has traditionally been a stronghold for most of Britain’s Muslim voters. However, in recent times, the party has faced challenges due to its stance on the war in Gaza. The repercussions of this were evident in the election results, showing a shift in votes in areas with significant Muslim populations. Notably, several of Labour’s usual strongholds were won by candidates offering a different approach to the Gaza policy.

In the Leicester South constituency, independent candidate Shockat Adam Patel’s victory over Labour’s Jonathan Ashworth was marked by his statement, “This is for Gaza,” during his speech. This outcome was unexpected, as Ashworth was anticipated to secure a cabinet position in Keir Starmer’s new government.

Many British Muslims, alongside other voters, have been calling for stronger condemnation from political leaders regarding the escalating casualties and worsening humanitarian situation in Gaza. There is a growing demand for the new government to exert more pressure on Israel to facilitate an immediate cease-fire with Hamas.

The local elections in May saw Labour experience a notable decline in areas with sizable Muslim communities. This issue also contributed to Labour’s surprising defeat in a recent by-election.

Leading up to the election, discussions predominantly centered on domestic matters, with the Gaza conflict not expected to significantly sway the outcome. Nevertheless, Paul Whiteley, a professor at the University of Essex specializing in government studies, highlighted that Labour’s position on the Gaza conflict seemed to contradict its historical anti-colonial principles.

Whiteley stated, “The conflict in Gaza starkly contrasts with Labour’s longstanding commitment to anti-colonialism. The party is now facing a situation where support for the Palestinian cause is increasing, and concerns over Israel’s actions are mounting within the party.”
