Highlights of the Coup Attempt

  • 34 people were martyred on the Bosphorus Bridge in Istanbul. The coup soldiers’ shooting at the people on the bridge caused a reaction.
  • More than 8,000 military personnel took part in FETO’s coup attempt, and 35 planes, 3 ships, 37 helicopters, 74 tanks, 246 armored vehicles and 4,000 light weapons were used.
  • The coup plotters targeted the most strategic areas in Istanbul, and their planning was made at the Gen. Nurettin Baransel Barracks.
  • An alarm was raised at Kuleli Military High School, and the putschists moved towards the July 15 Martyrs Bridge and the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge.

The President and the People’s Struggle

President Erdoğan encouraged the public to resist by calling on the public to take to the streets against the coup plotters. Citizens from different age groups and neighborhoods flocked to the squares.

As a result of the events on the Bosphorus Bridge on July 15, the name of the bridge was changed to “July 15 Martyrs Bridge”. The decision to change the name of the bridge was made in order to keep the events that took place in Istanbul, the resistance of the people and the memory of the martyrs alive.
