There were violent clashes between security forces and demonstrators opposing the government’s plan to increase taxes in Kenya. Tension escalated between the police and demonstrators in protests all over the country.
Violence of Protests
In the demonstrations that took place in various cities of Kenya, 1 person died, more than 200 people were injured and more than 100 people were detained. While the police used water pressurized and tear gas in the capital Nairobi, human rights organizations stated that real bullets were also used.
Death as a Result of Protest
The death of a 29-year-old demonstrator in the hospital further deepened the scale of the protests. While the police’s disproportionate use of force drew reactions, calls for calm were made in the protests, which were dominated by the young population.
Poverty and Tax Burden
Kenyans who participated in the protests stated that the new taxes would make their lives even more difficult, as they were already struggling with great poverty. The IMF, on the other hand, supported the tax increases, arguing that the government should increase revenues.
Government Step Back
President William Ruto decided to limit tax increases following increasing reactions. However, the Kenyan Parliament is expected to consider the new tax law.
