Baqeri made important statements at the meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, to discuss Israel’s attacks on the Palestinian people and violations of Iran’s sovereignty.
Baqeri stressed that the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has not taken sufficient measures against Israel’s aggression in the region. He said that, in particular, after Israel targeted the Iranian consulate in Damascus in April, the US blocked the condemnation of Tel Aviv’s action in the UNSC and closed all diplomatic channels. This situation has created the need for Iran to exercise its legitimate right of defense.
Baqeri stated that the UNSC failed to fulfill its duty after the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh by the occupying Israel in Tehran, “Due to the failure of the Security Council to take appropriate action against the Israeli regime’s aggression and violations, Iran has no choice but to exercise its legitimate right of self-defense against this regime’s aggression. This action is necessary to prevent this regime from further attacking Iran’s sovereignty, citizens and territory, and will be taken at the appropriate time and in the appropriate manner.”
Baqeri stated that the assassination of Haniyeh was made possible with the approval and intelligence support of the US to Israel, and stressed that Washington’s responsibility for this assassination should not be ignored. In this context, the Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister demanded that the OIC member countries condemn Israel’s attacks that violate the national sovereignty and territorial integrity of the countries in the region and give unequivocal support to Iran’s right to legitimate defense.
