The Released American Citizens
Evan Gershkovich
Evan Gershkovich, a 32-year-old reporter for The Wall Street Journal, was apprehended in March 2023 by masked agents from the Russian security services during a reporting trip in Yekaterinburg, a significant industrial city located approximately 850 miles east of Moscow. Following his arrest, he faced charges of espionage, making him the first Western journalist to be charged with such offenses since 1986.
In the indictment against him, Russian prosecutors accused Mr. Gershkovich of employing “painstaking conspiratorial methods” to acquire “classified information” pertaining to a military production facility responsible for manufacturing tanks and other military equipment. Both Mr. Gershkovich and his employer, along with the U.S. government, have vehemently denied these allegations, asserting that they are politically motivated.
On July 19, a Russian court in Yekaterinburg sentenced Mr. Gershkovich to a staggering 16 years in a high-security penal colony, a decision reached swiftly after only three hearings in the trial.
