Russia is taking strategic measures in response to the planned deployment of longer-range missiles by the United States in Germany. The Russian deputy foreign minister, Sergei A. Ryabkov, stated that the U.S. decision is concerning as it undermines regional safety and strategic stability.

Ryabkov emphasized that Russia will respond to this development with a calculated military strategy. He mentioned that Moscow had foreseen this decision and had already initiated preparations for necessary countermeasures.

The United States and Germany jointly announced that the deployment of the missiles, including significantly longer-range ones, will begin in Germany in 2026. These “episodic deployments” are part of the preparation for a more permanent stationing of these advanced capabilities in the future.

The planned weapons to be deployed include nonnuclear SM-6 missiles, Tomahawk cruise missiles, and hypersonic weapons under development. This move draws parallels to the historical Cold War era when both Moscow and Washington engaged in competitive missile deployments, causing tensions among American allies in Europe.
