Escaped Robots: Interesting Incident in South Korea

As the incidents of escaped robots spread rapidly, another interesting incident has been added to the list. A robot working for the Gumi City Council in South Korea recently threw itself down a two-meter ladder. Locals called it the country’s first robot “suicide.” The Robot Supervisor, appointed in August of last year, was one of the first of its kind to be used in the city.

Eyewitnesses who saw the robot moments before it “took its own life” said the robot, nicknamed ‘Robot Supervisor’, was behaving strangely and was “circling around in one spot as if something was there”.

The parts of the robot, manufactured by a California-based company, were quickly collected by city council officials and sent for analysis, but the reason for the robot’s erratic behavior has still not been found.

It was learned that the robot, which had an employee card, worked from 9 am to 4 pm just like other employees, but unlike most robots that are limited to a single floor, this one can easily move between floors and even call an elevator without any outside help. According to a Gumi city official, the robot “helped with daily document deliveries, city promotions, and information to residents” and was “officially part of the city hall.”

‘Is the workload too much?’

Local media quickly picked up on the news, running headlines asking whether the robot’s workload had anything to do with its malfunction.

The International Federation of Robotics said South Korea has one of the highest robot densities in the world, with one industrial robot for every ten human workers. When asked if the city council would adopt another robot, the official said there were currently no plans for who would replace the “outgoing” Robot Supervisor.
