Police officials told AA that 39 people were killed and hundreds were injured in the protests in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. It was reported that mobile internet connection was cut off in the country and access to social media was restricted. It was also shared that Bangladeshi news sites were not accessible from outside the country.

As part of the ongoing protests in Bangladesh, demonstrators have launched a “life stoppage” across the country. One of the chief coordinators of the protests, Asif Mahmud, announced that they have declared a “life stoppage” and that all institutions except hospitals and emergency services will not be allowed to operate.

  • Public sector quotas: While 56 percent of public sector positions are reserved for specific demographic groups and classes, 30 percent of these include families of those who participated in the 1971 War of Independence. These quotas were abolished in 2018 as a result of protests.
  • Supreme Court decision: Protests have begun following the Supreme Court’s decision to reintroduce the quota system. Protesters are accusing the system of discrimination and demanding a merit-based system.
  • Results of the protests: It was reported that 6 people were killed and approximately 250 students were injured on July 16 as a result of clashes that broke out during the protests in Dhaka, Chattogram and Rangpur cities.
