Prosecutors Prepare Aggressive Strategy in Hunter Biden’s Tax Trial
In a recent court filing on Wednesday, prosecutors indicated their intention to adopt a robust strategy in the upcoming tax trial of Hunter Biden in California. They aim to demonstrate how foreign entities financially compensated him to sway U.S. government policies during the time his father served as vice president.
The special counsel overseeing the case, David C. Weiss, has been engaged in a protracted dispute with Mr. Biden’s legal team regarding the admissibility of evidence as they prepare for a trial set for September. The charges against Mr. Biden involve allegations of tax evasion related to millions earned from foreign businesses. This trial follows a prior conviction related to a firearm purchase in Delaware in 2018, which Mr. Weiss also supervised.
Mr. Biden’s defense team has sought to exclude evidence concerning his lucrative foreign business ventures and his lifestyle during a period marked by struggles with crack cocaine and alcohol addiction. However, on Wednesday, Mr. Weiss’s team dismissed these objections, signaling a fierce courtroom battle ahead.
While prosecutors are poised to present evidence regarding Mr. Biden’s foreign business activities, they have refrained from formally accusing him of violating foreign lobbying laws, which are not included in the current charges. Instead, they plan to use the evidence to illustrate that Mr. Biden knowingly engaged in a scheme to acquire substantial sums of money without fulfilling his tax obligations.
As part of their case, prosecutors intend to call upon testimony from an American business associate of Mr. Biden’s. This testimony will shed light on a lucrative arrangement involving a Romanian real estate magnate who is currently facing corruption charges in his home country.
