Press Release on Solidarity Day with Those Tortured in Van

Van Labor and Democracy Platform members and civil society organizations came together within the scope of “26 June Solidarity Day with Those Tortured” and made an important press statement. The meeting was also attended by the Van Branch of the Human Rights Association, Van Representative Office of the Human Rights Foundation of Turkey, Van Bar Association, DEM Party provincial co-chairs and Star Women’s Association.

In the statement made on behalf of the Van Labor and Democracy Platform, it was emphasized that “We will continue to fight against impunity.” Sevim Çiçek, Van Representative of the Turkish Human Rights Foundation, stated that they will continue to stand by the victims of torture and said: “As institutions aiming to reach a torture-free Turkey and the world, we will continue our efforts to make the “The voices of those tortured were heard and demanded justice.”

Çiçek stated that the state should stop using torture as a tool of intimidation and that the authorities should give up discourses that encourage torture. He emphasized that necessary steps should be taken to end the culture of impunity, support those exposed to torture and ensure justice.

Stating that the fight against torture should continue, Çiçek said that measures in line with international standards should be taken and that torture should be investigated quickly and effectively. He also underlined that prisons should be opened to independent inspections and inspections by human rights organizations should be allowed.
