Volcanic Eruptions Continue on Etna
Recent volcanic eruptions on Etna continued to spew ash and lava from the Voragine crater throughout the night. According to Italian media, some planes due to land at Catania Fontanarossa Airport were diverted to Palermo and some flights were delayed. The airport was not closed despite Etna’s activity.
Etna’s Height Changed
According to data from the Etna Observatory of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology of Italy, the height above sea level has increased due to volcanic activity in the Voragine crater on Etna. The height of the Voragine crater on Etna, which has not had an eruption since 2021, has reached 3,369 meters. The crater reached 3,347 meters, passing the southeast crater, one of the most active craters.
It was determined that the level of the crater rose as the intense volcanic activity in the Voragine crater increased especially between July 5-7. Mount Etna has been active in recent weeks with frequent ash, lava eruptions, lava flows and tremors. Etna, the highest active volcano in continental Europe, continues to be the focal point of volcanic activity in the region.
