Objection to the Presence of American Forces in Iraq
Members of the Iraqi Parliament Basim Hassanwith Mustafa Sened , filed an application with the Iraqi Supreme Federal Court to annul and cancel the agreement that allowed American forces to remain on Iraqi soil. The court reviewed the deputies’ application and announced that it did not have the authority to make a decision on the matter.
In a written statement made by the court, it was stated that the application of the MPs was rejected on the grounds of “lack of jurisdiction in terms of the subject”. When we look at the details of the agreement, it is seen that the agreement signed between Iraq and the US in 2008 Strategic Framework AgreementIn the articles 3 and 4 of the first section of the Agreement, under the title of Cooperation Principles, it is emphasized that in addition to the temporary military presence of the USA in the country upon the request of the Iraqi central government, Iraq’s sovereignty must also be respected.
Recently, some political figures in Iraq have been demanding the immediate termination of the Strategic Framework Agreement signed between Iraq and the United States and the withdrawal of American forces from Iraqi territory. This could lead to a reshaping of political debates and security dynamics in Iraq.
