The power outage in the Balkans brought life to a halt. Due to the malfunction in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro, the electricity distribution system was almost completely out of service. The power outage was also effective in some parts of Croatia and Albania. Traffic lights, public transportation and businesses came to a halt.
Start and Reason of Outage
Sasa Mujovic, Minister of Energy and Mining of Montenegro, stated that the increase in electricity use caused by high air temperatures puts an overload on the system. In the statement made by the Montenegrin Electricity Distribution System (CEDIS), “Almost all of Montenegro was left without electricity due to faults in the network.” statements were included. It was reported that the power outage started with a problem in the power grid in Montenegro and affected the countries in the region.
Tram and Trolleybus Services Stopped in Sarajevo: In Bosnia and Herzegovina, public transport services stopped in Sarajevo due to a power outage. It was stated that the reason for the power outage was a transmission line failure in the region. Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Elektroprivreda company announced that the outage originated in Montenegro and affected its own systems.
Police on alert: In Split, Croatia, police were heavily deployed due to traffic lights not working. When people caught in the power outage in shopping malls returned to their vehicles en masse, traffic jams occurred in the garages.
Outage in Albania: In Albania, there was a power outage in the capital Tirana and other cities. Electricity was gradually restored to various areas within about an hour.
