New Sinkhole Formation in Karapınar
As a result of the groundwater receding and the soil collapsing in Karapınar, the number of sinkholes continues to increase. Finally, a new sinkhole with a diameter of 20 meters and a depth of 35 meters occurred at around 20:00 yesterday evening in Cafer Şık Yaylası, approximately 9 kilometers from the city center.
On August 15 last year, another sinkhole with a diameter of 60 meters and a depth of 20 meters formed right next to this sinkhole. This situation has become a serious problem that threatens agricultural activities and settled life in the region.
Fatih Şık, the owner of the field where the sinkhole is located, explained the situation as follows: “The sinkhole suddenly occurred yesterday evening. I had noticed the water was murky the day before and had a feeling that something was going to happen. My friends had come to visit and we were sitting. My friends said they heard a noise coming from the field. When we looked towards the field, we saw that the soil had collapsed and water was gushing into the air. “A sinkhole of about 20 meters in diameter and 35 meters deep was formed.”
Fatih Şık stated that this situation was frightening for them, “Since we experienced a similar situation last year, we thought we should be more experienced this time, but we were still afraid and anxious. Our fears have doubled. We really want to leave here, but our house and animals are here. We say, ‘Let’s not plant the field,’ but the sustenance for my children and myself is here. We are on the edge of life and death. We don’t know what to do. Yesterday, I passed through the place where the sinkhole is five times. Because I use sprinkler irrigation. I open and close the valve. “If the sinkhole had formed while I was passing, I would have perished in front of my children.”
Fatih Şık’s mother Ayşe Şık said, “What can we say, it was from God. When the cave-in happened, our morale was low. We couldn’t sleep until the morning.”He expressed their concerns by saying.
