Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed Congress at the U.S. Capitol, defending Israel’s military campaign in Gaza amidst escalating tensions. Netanyahu emphasized that the conflict with Hamas is part of a broader struggle between Iran and the U.S., asserting that Israel’s actions are not just in defense of itself but also in defense of its allies.

Inside the House chamber, a visible divide was apparent as Republicans showed strong support for Netanyahu, while many Democratic members chose to boycott the speech. Representative Rashida Tlaib displayed a sign labeling Netanyahu as a “war criminal,” highlighting the differing opinions on the ongoing conflict.

Outside the Capitol, over 5,000 pro-Palestinian demonstrators gathered to protest Netanyahu’s address, calling for an end to U.S. military aid to Israel. Clashes with the police and symbolic acts, such as burning an effigy of the prime minister, underscored the intensity of emotions surrounding the issue.

Netanyahu referred to the antiwar protesters as “Iran’s useful idiots” and expressed gratitude towards both President Biden and former President Trump. He is set to meet with both leaders, as well as Vice President Kamala Harris, later in the week to continue discussions on the conflict.
