In a written statement made by the Italian Prime Ministry, details were shared regarding the telephone conversation between Italian Prime Minister Meloni and Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu. The two leaders discussed developments in Gaza and the region.
Meloni expressed his support for Israel’s right to self-defense and expressed his hope for a sustainable ceasefire and the release of hostages held by Hamas, in line with UN Security Council resolution 2735 and US mediation efforts.
The meeting also discussed increasing humanitarian aid to civilians in Gaza. It was recalled that Italy is at the forefront of the United Nations Interim Peace Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) to support stability in the region. It was also stated that a joint assessment was made to prevent escalation of tensions on the border between Israel and Lebanon.
