Innovative Research from Hitit University: Melanin Obtained from Carrot Peels Shows Anticancer Effect on Lung Cells
According to the statement made by the Rectorate, a study conducted under the leadership of Assistant Professor Gamze Nur Müjdeci from the Faculty of Engineering at Hitit University, who specializes in machinery and manufacturing technologies, focuses on melanin, which can be obtained from natural and sustainable sources.
As a result of research conducted within the scope of the project supported by TÜBİTAK, it was determined that melanin obtained from carrot peel exhibits anticancer properties on lung cells.
Project Leader Dr. Gamze Nur Müjdeci:“We conducted studies using samples from different agricultural products while producing melanin. We found that the melanin obtained from carrot peels was higher in amount than the others. As a result of our further studies, we revealed the anticancer and antioxidant properties of melanin.”
Müjdeci emphasized that the research is an important step in the evaluation of organic waste and stated that melanin obtained from carrot peels promises hope in future cancer treatment methods.
