A sad event occurred during the ongoing local elections in Mexico. Salvador Villalba, the newly elected Mayor of the town of Copala in the state of Guerrero, was attacked by unidentified armed men on the Acapulco-Pinotepa highway while driving his car. Villalba, who was taken out of his vehicle and murdered in front of his wife as a result of the attack, lost his life. His injured wife was immediately taken to the hospital.
The investigation launched by the Guerrero state prosecutor’s office into Villalba’s death continues. It turned out that the mayor had been threatened for a long time and was protected by the national guard. Villalba, who was elected mayor of the town of Copala in the elections held on June 2, became one of the last victims of political violence in Mexico.
The recent increase in violence against politicians in Mexico has reached alarming levels. Peace and security concerns continue in the country, where 34 leaders have died since September 2023.
