In a dramatic turn of events, exuberant looters descended upon the residence of Bangladesh’s Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, following her abrupt resignation and subsequent flight from the country. Local broadcast footage captured the chaos as individuals swarmed the opulent estate, pilfering furniture, bedding, and even potted plants.

Videos revealed people scaling the residence’s imposing black gates, throwing items against the walls, destroying portraits, and indulging in a lavish spread of food left behind in catering dishes. The crowd was seen celebrating, with many raising their hands and fists in triumph, while others jumped for joy on the streets outside. Numerous onlookers recorded the pandemonium on their cellphones.

Social media and live television broadcasts also showcased the surreal scene of people taking animals from the prime minister’s residence, which included chickens, ducks, and rabbits. Some individuals even posed for photos with the animals, further highlighting the bizarre nature of the unfolding events.

Monsur Ali, a garment worker among the thousands who invaded the prime minister’s estate, expressed the sentiments of the crowd. “We went there out of anger,” he stated, while proudly clutching a plate he had taken. “Nothing is left there.”

Prime Minister Hasina, 76, was forced from power after weeks of escalating protests. Initially sparked by disputes over coveted government jobs, the demonstrations began peacefully but turned violent as government security forces intervened. Reports indicate that nearly 300 individuals lost their lives in the ensuing clashes.

Public discontent towards Ms. Hasina had been mounting due to her increasingly authoritarian rule over the past 15 years. In a statement to the nation, the country’s army chief confirmed Hasina’s resignation and announced that an interim government would be established to restore order and governance.
