Liz Truss Loses Seat in Parliament

Liz Truss, the former Conservative Party prime minister, faced a stunning defeat as she lost her seat in Parliament on Friday morning. Following a tumultuous 49-day premiership in 2022, marked by soaring mortgage rates and a tumbling pound, Truss was ousted from her position. Despite winning a significant majority of over 26,000 votes five years ago, this time she was defeated by a narrow margin of 630 votes, with a substantial swing in support towards the Labour Party.

Speaking to the BBC, Truss acknowledged that the Conservatives’ failure to deliver on key policies, such as maintaining low taxes and reducing immigration, played a significant role in their loss. She attributed this lack of delivery to the party’s handling of the legacy inherited in 2010, rather than placing blame solely on herself.

Truss is not the only high-profile Conservative to lose their seat in the recent election. Several former cabinet members also faced defeat, including:

  • Grant Shapps: Former defense secretary who held various cabinet positions over the Conservatives’ 14-year tenure in power.
  • Penny Mordaunt: Leader of the House of Commons who previously ran for leadership of the party.
  • Jacob Rees-Mogg: Notable supporter of Boris Johnson and former business secretary under Liz Truss.
  • Robert Buckland: Former justice secretary who described the election results as an “electoral Armageddon” for the Conservatives.
  • Gillian Keegan: Former education secretary.
  • Lucy Frazer: Former culture secretary.
  • Michelle Donelan: Held cabinet roles under Johnson, Truss, and Sunak, most recently serving as a minister for science, innovation, and technology.

The Conservative Party also lost traditional strongholds, including seats previously held by former prime ministers Boris Johnson, David Cameron, and Theresa May, further highlighting the scale of the defeat.
